TomTom ONE 3rd Edition 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Instrument Navigator
I'd favour the TomTom, it has a big display and is easy and urgent to use but make sure you look into the maintenance offered rather than just the unit, it will all depend on where you function. Someone once described the service they received (but they are in Australia) this way: TomTom is like buying a gorgeous new car that works just fine only to find later that there aren't too many gas stations. So maybe also publish a question on here asking how people who own the TomTom like their assignment and let them know what country you reside in or what bishopric you live near. It's all about tracking down I believe. As for the unit itself, they are great. Also, be wise of where you purchase the unit, you will want a guarantee. Make sure, if you plan to purchase a TomTom, that you get one with a warrenty.
Additionally, a financier has the Garmin StreetPilot C330 and he hates it. Decent passing that along.

I've looked at Consumer Reports and peruse some reviews online. I like to get everyone's impression on the good, the bad and the "ugly." So far the Garmin Nuvi 350 is looking nice-looking good. I'd like to brace around $300 or under.

I have a Garmin too. Its the easiest id I have ever used in my life I think. You may have a bad one. I would go to a electronics upon and have them check it out. Garmin's are very narcotic addict friendly and easy to use.

What's the metamorphosis b/w car vs portable GPS? I found a pretty good deal for Magellan Maestro 3210 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator but is it divergent from "car navigator"? Any recommendation as to which one I should get?
They're basically the same element.
The only difference is that some 'portable' GPS units are not specifically designed for means maps and driving directions.
Some are for continuous, hiking, aviation, etc.
So, if it is a portable unit that has in someone's bailiwick mapping and turn by turn directions, it is the same as a 'car' GPS
