At the onset of last year, Nike introduced the $199 Nike+ SportWatch GPS, which uses satellite coordination to track routes while recording times, calories burned and other observations intended to motivate users to run. While Nike already sells devices in its Nike+ line, it's clear from Thursday's somebody-studded product launch that the company believes consumers worldwide will understand the $149 FuelBand's features. The hoopla abutting Thursday's introduction of the Nike+ FuelBand was designed to leave the impression that the band is a pioneer in the world of digital qualifications recording devices. And Adidas, which entered the market later, introduced its latest technological advance in October, an all-directions area device that was designed at Adidas America headquarters in North Portland. Garmin offers an even deeper array of products. Other Nike+ products take in the $59 SportBand which, combined with the $19 Sensor, wirelessly measures running and walking data. Only through movement of the wrist and the use of "accelerometry," the wristband is designed to measure time, calories, steps and something called NikeFuel. The colophon, Nike says, will measure movement of all types, whether swatting a tennis ball or tossing a pizza. Garmin Ecumenical Inc.
