What is WAAS and why is it important to GPS receivers?

This topic came to me as I was searching for a portable navigation GPS for my car. I wondered as I researched products why some offered WAAS while others did not.

WAAS stands for Major Area Augmentation System.

Basicaly, atmospheric conditions will reduce the accuracy of the GPS satellite signal. At any delineated time the best resolution from a standard GPS will be a position to within 30 ft.

On a Garmin GPS product, is it better to use normal GPS mode or WAAS?

You won't get any aid from using WAAS mode. You will very likely not be able to get the satellites which are very low on the horizon, which works well for airplanes but not for cars.

will waas gps work in baja mexico ? before i buy a new gps with waas, I`d like to know if waas with work in ba?

i have a gps in my skiff in baja and it works fine but I wanted to up grade to gps with waas and need to find out if waas with work before i buy a new gps .

Since WAAS purely adds more accuracy to the current GPS system, yes it will work just fine.
You can check on coverage anytime only by using the "REAL-TIME WAAS COVERAGE MAP"
