I yen to buy a motorola atrix with mobile hotspot so i can use my laptop outside. The only thing is that its kind of expensive ($45/month) on AT&T. I would like to separate whats the speed of it for my laptop.

That depends on where you are. If you're in an region that has HSPA+ coverage, you could theoretically get 14Mbps. If you're in an area with only HSPA coverage, you can get about 3Mbps.

Yes they're dissimilar. The internet you find on a mobile is the carrier's network.

Hotspots use a normal connection like the one on a PC. You screw with the hotspot via WiFi and not mobile signal.

We have Verizon, and I was looking for a phone which was a WiFi hotspot so we could use it as an internet and printer hub for our effectively computers. Is there a Droid that does this? How about an iPhone?

There is a droid app called PDANet. It does set someone back like $30 but with it you can turn any droid phone into a hotspot, either wireless or wired.
